Widely considered the best female soccer player in history, Hamm played for the U.S. national soccer team for women of 17 years, building a larger base of fans of any American ahtlete. She was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
 
The daughter of an Air Force pilot, Hamm and her family moved frequently through his childhood and his brother credit, Garrett, of encouraging her in sports. At age 15, was the youngest player ever to play football for the national team. Hamm attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he helped lead the team to consecutive championships in the NCAA women's oven.
 
In 1991, at age 19, was the youngest ever to win the World Cup teammember. Five years later, Hamm and teammates including Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain and Kristine Lilly, secured the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Athens, Georgia. That again win gold again in 2004.
 
Other awards include being selected female athlete of U.S. Soccer of the Year five consecutive years (1994-1998), MVP of the Women's Cup in 1995 and winner of three ESPY awards, including Football Player of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year.
